Having trouble scanning or copying multiple documents on your Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615? Maybe the automatic document feeder keeps jamming, struggles to pick up pages, or feeds more than one sheet at a time. If you've ruled out a problem with the paper itself, your scanner maintenance kit may need attention.

The scanner maintenance kit’s two roller sets move paper through the ADF. You need to replace the kit when the rollers wear, or the printer indicates maintenance is needed, to help prevent feeding problems and restore reliable scanning.

At Strategic Technology Partners of Texas (STPT), we've serviced thousands of Xerox printers and handled roller-related maintenance issues thousands of times. With more than 40 years in the printer industry, we know how frustrating it can be when a simple scanning task interrupts your workday.

In this guide, Matthew from The Printing Workshop, a printer technician with several years of hands-on repair experience, will show you how to replace the scanner maintenance kit on a Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615.

Quick Answer: How Do You Replace the Scanner Maintenance Kit?

To replace the scanner maintenance kit on a Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615, open the top cover of the automatic document feeder. Release the two latches holding the pickup roll assembly, remove it, and install the replacement by aligning it with the white guides. Next, remove the black cover inside the feeder, lift out the separator roll assembly, and install the new one by matching its teeth with the corresponding slots. Reattach the black cover and close the top cover.

The process involves replacing two parts, both located inside the document feeder.

What Is a Scanner Maintenance Kit?

A scanner maintenance kit contains replaceable rollers that help feed documents through a printer's automatic document feeder during scanning and copying.

On the Xerox VersaLink B605 and B615, the kit includes two components:

  • Pickup roll assembly: Located inside the top cover, this component helps pull documents into the scanner.
  • Separator roll assembly: Located farther inside the document feeder, this component helps separate individual sheets so they feed through correctly.

These parts work together to help the machine handle multiple-page documents without feeding several sheets at once.

The scanner maintenance kit applies to multifunction printers equipped with an automatic document feeder. It is not used on print-only machines.

When Should You Replace the Scanner Maintenance Kit?

Replace the scanner maintenance kit when your Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615 indicates it’s needed, or when worn feeder rollers cause repeated scanning problems.

Look for inconsistent paper pickup, multiple pages feeding at once, or recurring jams. Since damaged paper, dust, or debris can cause similar issues, check for these before replacing the kit.

How Do You Replace the Scanner Maintenance Kit on a Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615?

The replacement process has two parts. Matthew starts with the pickup roll assembly inside the top cover, then moves on to the separator roll assembly located farther inside the document feeder.

Part 1: Replace the Pickup Roll Assembly

Step 1: Open the Automatic Document Feeder's Top Cover

Start by opening the top cover of the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Inside the cover, you'll see the pickup roll assembly.

This is the first component you'll replace.

Step 2: Release the Pickup Roll Assembly

Look for the two small locking latches on the pickup roll assembly.

Place your fingers inside the latches, release them, and rotate them outward.

Once both latches are released, grab them and pull the pickup roll assembly straight out of the cover.

Set the old assembly aside.

Step 3: Align the New Pickup Roll Assembly

Take the new pickup roll assembly and look next to the black handles on each side.

You'll notice small grooves or trough-shaped openings.

These openings are designed to fit around the white fins inside the scanner's top cover.

Carefully position the replacement so the troughs rest on the white fins.

This alignment helps guide the new assembly into its correct position.

Step 4: Secure the New Pickup Roll Assembly

Once the troughs are aligned with the white fins, use your fingers to push the roller assembly upward.

While holding it in place, rotate the two black locking handles back to their original positions.

Make sure both handles are securely locked.

Give the assembly a final upward push to confirm it's properly seated.

The pickup roll replacement is now complete.

Part 2: Replace the Separator Roll Assembly

Step 5: Remove the Black Separator Roll Cover

With the top cover still open, locate the small black cover inside the document feeder.

Place your finger against the back of the cover and push inward to release it.

Lift the cover, swing it out of the way, and set it aside.

You'll now have access to the separator roll assembly underneath.

Step 6: Remove the Old Separator Roll Assembly

Locate the separator roll assembly inside the document feeder.

Place your finger toward the back of the assembly and carefully lift it upward and outward.

The assembly should come free from its position.

Set the old separator roll aside and prepare the replacement.

Step 7: Align the New Separator Roll Assembly

Before installing the new separator roll, look at its sides.

You'll notice that one side has a single small tooth, while the other side has two teeth.

Inside the document feeder, you'll find matching openings: one slot on one side and two slots on the other.

These features help ensure the replacement is installed in the correct direction.

Position the separator roll so the single tooth aligns with the single slot and the two teeth align with the two corresponding slots.

Step 8: Install the New Separator Roll Assembly

Once the teeth are properly aligned, lower the new separator roll assembly into the slots.

Give the assembly a gentle push to make sure it's fully seated.

You shouldn't need to force it. If the replacement isn't fitting correctly, check the alignment of the teeth and slots before continuing.

Step 9: Reinstall the Black Cover

Take the black cover you removed earlier.

You'll notice a cork-like material on the cover, along with two small tabs that hold it in position.

Line up those tabs with the corresponding holes inside the document feeder.

Once they're aligned, rotate the cover downward and press near the latch until you hear or feel it snap into place.

Step 10: Close the Top Cover

Once both roller assemblies are installed and the black cover is secured, close the automatic document feeder's top cover.

Make sure it closes completely.

You've now completed the scanner maintenance kit replacement on your Xerox VersaLink B605 or B615.

Common Scanner Maintenance Kit Replacement Mistakes to Avoid

Not Releasing Both Pickup Roll Latches

The pickup roll assembly is held in place by two locking handles. Both must be released and turned outward before you can remove it.

Not Aligning the Pickup Roll With the White Fins

The small troughs near the black handles need to line up with the white fins inside the cover. If they're not aligned correctly, the assembly may not seat properly.

Installing the Separator Roll Backward

The separator roll has one tooth on one side and two on the other. Make sure they match the corresponding slots inside the document feeder.

Forgetting to Secure the Black Cover

After installing the separator roll, return the black cover to its position and press near the latch until it snaps securely into place.

Quick Recap: Replacing the Scanner Maintenance Kit

Replacing the scanner maintenance kit involves two main parts.

First, open the top cover and release the pickup roll assembly's two locking handles. Remove the old assembly, align the replacement's troughs with the white fins, push it upward, and lock both handles.

Next, remove the black separator roll cover and lift out the old separator roll assembly. Install the replacement by matching its teeth with the corresponding slots, push it into place, and reinstall the black cover.

Once everything is secured, close the top cover to finish.
